Spectral Bat's Evening Snack by WingedSonar Spectral Bat's Evening Snack by WingedSonar
I've never done a shaded light carving before. Normally I do line art shaded from the inside of the pumpkin, not shapes and depth differences like this. I can definitely say more like this aren't out of the question for Octobers to come.

The bat I carved is a Vampyrum spectrum, and they do prey upon birds and various other large, active edibles in South America. This one might be carrying back its kill to a mate and pups waiting back home. If...he can land the shot.

Varied Lighting Shots

[Update: The "Stellaluna" comments are hilarious! No offense meant. I just don't recall the part where the bat transforms into a South American carnivore and devours the bird family. XD]

Sugar Skull with Beet Roses by snerk My Personal Winner This work stunned me with its beauty and celebration of the holiday. Not only is the photograph amazing in mood and balance, but the carvings are also stunning. Please give her some much-deserved praise!

PS: If I don't reply, please don't take it personally; I just feel like I'm ridiculous and repeating myself with "thank you"s. I can't even believe I placed. It was just to join in and have fun with other carvers. Thank you, everyone, for taking the time to say such kind things to me! I'll TRY to reply with something relevant. ^^;

This is very lovely.

If you ask me, I kind of think the winners and runner ups should have been reversed. The winners were okay, but I thought the Runer Ups were excellent.

This is amazing! How on earth did you manage the shading?

I was trying relief shading, but it's a very mild attempt when compared to others. The deeper you cut, the more the object jumps to the foreground.

Aw. this reminds me of Stellaluna, the story-picture book that was read to me as a little kid. It was about a fruit bat with that name....

If that dosent win, I'm going to fork the dA admins. Not only is it my absolurte favorite animal, it's a wonderfull pose and FANTASTIC PUMPKIN CARVING SKILL. I can barely pull of the normal jackolantern face, let alone SHADE with a pumpkin. WOW.

Thanks for the bat bias. ; ) I hadn't hollowed it until I was finished either, and I was sure I'd have to make corrections. I was relieved I didn't have to. Next year, I might even try the pen sketching someone did. Simply amazing results with details, though I do enjoy full carving more. It's more a challenge.
