It was only a matter of time before I began making one of these...
Fave it and credit it if you use it please.
Bats are highly adapted to flight, the only mammal that can truly fly. They make up a quarter of all mammals on earth with their sheer numbers and about one-thousand very different species, which are found on almost every continent on the planet and range from desert lands to rainforests. Only the most severe conditions bar bats.
Due to the world-wide range of these creatures, they have adapted to behave and appear very different from one family, or even species, to the next. Some species fish like eagles, others catch pests such as mosquitos or roaches, more eat fruit and disperse seeds that may not grow unless passed through a bat's system, and lastly, three species in South America drink blood.
There are two suborders to bats, Micro and Macrochiroptera. The "macrobats" aren't able to use sonar, instead having larger eyes and dog-like noses. They all eat fruit and are found in the Old World. "Microbats" on the other hand are found all over the world including the Americas and do use sonar, some species almost relying entirely on it to locate food or to identify roost mates. Their overall appearances range from familiarly shrew-like to simply bizarre. Don't let the name "micro" fool you though. Even if one species is tiny as your thumb nail, the largest of the microbats can be as huge as the largest macrobat, though its behavior and appearance is quite different.

Wow, thank you very much for all the bat art love! Glad you like 'em! I mainly support microbats, but I appreciate all species including the fox-faces. There's also a fanclub called Bats here on DA. You could look through their favorites. The owner hasn't had time to return to it though, or us moderators, and the members never were active with it, just using it as a source file, so it's been pretty dead, but it's still good for looking through.
