Happy New- Oh you know...

Fri Jan 1, 2010, 12:50 AM

DA Entry
We like rounded even numbers, and now it's in our year. So Happy "Twenty-ten," as they're saying, since saying that for the first nine just wouldn't have made sense.

Now people will start judging everything as the first [enter random thing that doesn't really pertain to the passage of time] of the new year all over again. "What will be my first sketch? My first new art submission here? My first resolution before I change my mind a million times before just giving up and doing what I've always done?" Oh, it's such a mystery! A very uninteresting one. ; )

Spent part of the holiday with my parents, played in the snow, carved a Father Christmas in a snowhill, sledded with Grey afterward, it was good. I received a handy dandy fisheye lens to upgrade my previous lens, a 200 mm (which I'm trading in because of missing a VR control, rainbow effect, and slippage), and Grey gifted me with an amazing little HD camcorder.

Slippers, candy and the like were also given, and those slippers are the best Winter gift ever. You haven't lived until you've walked around a cold house in the softest fuzzy, foam-padded slippers you can find. A little plush snail was put in my stocking too, as my mom knows my plushy vices for very un-plushifiable critters. All I need now is a realistic octopus plushy, and my master plan shall be complete.

Aw, who'm I kidding: HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Projects
Working on a couple submissions to the Chiropterclub of s'more interesting bats, and I'm still staring at that Bat Reference piece seeking out revisions or upgrades. Though I wanted to keep it single-page, this has the potential to become something quite large.

Solstice Scrapbook & a Bat Study in the Making

Tue Dec 22, 2009, 7:24 AM

DA Entry

Currently in the making is a Chiroptera Physiology Study, where I'll lay out best I can in ink several examples of bats and just how different their bodies' various details are. I've been wanting to do this for some time now, as I tire of looking over various references, and photos are hard to interpret unless you pour over them for some time. This way, I'll only need to do it once and won't have to thumb through my books so much. I say "so much" because this will merely be a cheat sheet and a short cut, but I'll no doubt be thumbing away, questioning my own work as always. Oh, major references for Chiroptology are from M. Brock Fenton. If you're a fellow enthusiast, I highly recommend everything he's done recently. Be careful though, as even information from 2006 is now somewhat outdated depending on the species you're researching.

The weather outside is seasonally frigid. Winter Solstice has passed, and now there's a white blanket of snow on the ground! It's a good knee-height blanket that came in a single blizzard on the night of the 19th, just two days before Solstice. Winter just couldn't wait to get here and chill us locals all, and it's said two days from now there will be yet another falling of snow! A good fall like this hasn't happened in quite some time for December. For myself, it was officially winter on the day of that storm. Falling snow is always my decider, but it usually takes far longer to put up.

As for the solstice itself, it also means soon after is family, gift-giving, and maybe a white blanket of snow on Christmas, when many of us celebrate the endurance and returning of light and life in the northern hemisphere. This is still my favorite holiday next to Samhain, but what makes this perfect is when the snow is fresh, making the nights brightly lit with that signature pink from an overcast sky or that glistening blue from a bright moon overhead.

I'll hope for the speedy return of Spring as quickly as the next person, so for now, it's time to sip some hot cocoa and light that evergreen aflame. Shame the party is right on the brink of the coldest part of the year. But I guess they were really hoping Spring would come back fast as it could in ancient times and thought light rituals might aid things somehow, like turnip carvings, only pretty.

I've put together a collection of my Winter Season works, either for myself or others to view. The un-holiday one was just chosen for a similar mood.

Halloween Carvings Ho!

Mon Oct 19, 2009, 7:58 AM

DA Entry
This year of Samhain, I finally got back into my harvest carving, and it's back with a vengeance. I had several designs planned this time, rather than one, and three made it to completion, though there are still two pumpkins get to potentially carve. We'll see. For now, check out the ones that made the cut in my gallery!

Here are also some of my previous carvings:

The Village parade was also attended yet again. Ironic I should bring a good camera...and yet get no good shots of myself actually IN the parade. During the parade, however, Cobra Commander and I were stopped several times for pictures, I was lightly spanked once (O_O) and even gave a row of high-fives and hugs to spectators upon request. Definitely an awesome experience. And hey, one of the photos of us taken by a parade-goer actually came out pretty cool! I've edited background noise and water specks, and he's given me permission to show it here!

There's also a test shot of my costume before tweaking, but this is the crown.

Next is November into December, when I come up with yet another four gift ideas for the winter solstice and Christmas.

So stay tuned, there's going to be plenty of holiday visual entertainment to see!
